I approached this theme by referring to denim’s history, specifically women in the workforce during and after World War II. When women had to take over men’s jobs, they needed sturdy fabric that allowed them to get the job done. In my designs I recreated workwear ensembles while addressing the idea of sustainability and consumption. All of the garments I designed can be used in multiple ways, allowing them to transform into full looks or individual pieces. With multi-faceted garments, the user is able to consume less because one garment can take on multiple forms.

Manifesto

I see denim as a necessary fabric. Its ability to withstand constant use and still be able to hold up allows people to live their lives in it. Denim has a rich history involving changing workwear as well as being a platform for rebellion. I imagine denim’s history to continue to allow people to use it in multiple ways, but I think that sustainability should be tackled in a new way. If we are able to create and design denim garments that can be transformed and mixed and matched, we might be able to consume less while getting more out of these garments.
